Rignano Garganico, mercoledì 18 novembre 2020 - Questa è una breve biografia sul mio bisnonno, Giuseppe Scipione Del Vecchio, emigrato in USA nel 1912 e deceduto nel marzo 1962. <<Egli nasce a Rignano, Garganico, Italia il 19 settembre 1885. Giuseppe emigrò negli Stati Uniti nel 1912. Salpò a bordo della S.S. Luisiana il 1 ° luglio e fece il viaggio di 2 settimane da Napoli, Italia, al porto di New York, New York.
Giuseppe aveva una destinazione prevista a Louisville, Ky. Mi è stato detto che Giuseppe avrebbe dovuto raggiungere suo cugino, Michele De Felice, lì in Kentucky e viaggiare con Michele, sua moglie ei suoi figli. Salvene Dell era il figlio di Joe e Birdie, nato nel 1929, appena 2 anni dopo Josephine.
E poi mio nonno - Joe E. Dell arrivò nel 1933.
Ricordo che mia madre, Kathlene, raccontava le storie di come mio nonno Joe E. e suo fratello Salvene avrebbero parlato dell'assassino della sorella. Quando mia madre era una ragazzina, ascoltava Joe E. ei suoi fratelli pianificare la loro vendetta contro Critten Gray. Mia madre ha detto che stavano facendo il conto alla rovescia per il momento in cui sarebbe stato rilasciato dalla prigione e lo stavano cercando per aver ucciso la loro sorella Josephine.

Amava coltivare tutti i tipi di verdure diverse. Amava anche cucinare. Preparava la pasta fatta in casa e amava i peperoncini piccanti: più erano piccanti, meglio era. Si sedeva a tavola e li mangiava come caramelle.
Amava la sua famiglia e li ha cresciuti fino a diventare grandi lavoratori. Credeva anche in una forte disciplina. Ricordo mio nonno - Joe, che raccontava le storie di come suo padre lo avrebbe sculacciato con una frusta da cavallo. Da ragazzino dispettoso, cercava di correre e nascondersi, e si ricordava di Giuseppe che lo inseguiva per il cortile con la frusta.
Mia nonna Virgie - che è sposata con Joe E Dell, mi ha raccontato la storia di quando lei e suo fratello, Claude Baker, stavano uscendo con Joe E Dell e la sorella di Joe - Mary Magdalene Dell.
Virgie e Claude vennero a cena a casa di Giuseppe per corteggiare suo figlio Joe e sua figlia Mary. Giuseppe Scipione stava preparando il pasto. Hanno visto Giuseppe stendere la pasta e tagliare la pasta a listarelle. Ma Giuseppe disse a Birdie che il pane di mais doveva essere dato in pasto ai maiali. Non avrebbe mangiato il pane di mais. This is a short biography about my great grandfather – Giuseppe Scipione Del Vecchio.
He was born in Rignano,Garganico, Italy on September 19, 1885.
Giuseppe emigrated to the United States in 1912. He set sail aboard the S.S. Luisiana on July 1st and made the 2-week voyage from Naples, Italy to the New York, New York harbor.
Giuseppe had an intended destination of Louisville, Ky. I was told that Giuseppe was supposed to join his cousin, Michele De Felice, there in Kentucky and travel with Michele, his wife and his children.
Giuseppe had left his wife Maria and their 1 year old son, Matteo, at home in Italy. He missed them very much and wanted to be reunited with them. After making his way from New York through Ohio, and ending up in Louisville, Ky., Giuseppe Scipione tried to make the necessary arrangements for his wife and child to reunite with him in America, but they failed to come.
I never have been able to find out why they could not come to the U.S.
Shortly after this disappointment, he met a young widow woman named Annie Rice Craige. Annie found out that Giuseppe had money saved from the past few years of laboring in America, money he had been saving to send back to Maria and Matteo so that they could make the trip to reunite with him in the Unites States.
Annie seduced the heartbroken Giuseppe, and they were married in Virginia in July of 1918. She then very quickly took advantage of the savings and then deserted Giuseppe.
It has also been told that Annie thought Giuseppe was going overseas with the U.S. Army - as they were drafting young men for WW1, so she pressured him into marriage as her intentions were to collect his government U.S. Army paycheck while he was away in the war.
However, during that time Giuseppe collapsed out on the street one day with a terrible case of appendicitis, and he nearly died. Afterward Annie realized that he was not being drafted and shipped out, due to his physical condition, so she quickly deserted him after only a few short weeks of marriage.
Heartbroken and alone once again, Giuseppe joined himself to a coal mining camp named Elys, Ky. There he buried his sorrows in hard labor. Working in the coal mines of the Appalachian area was an exceedingly difficult and dangerous job.
Day by day he would walk along the path to the coal mine from his place of residence. On his route to the mine, he would pass a modest house with a fenced front yard. He noticed a woman, with a cute little boy named Otis, would always play in the front yard. Otis reminded him of his Son Matteo back home in Italy. He would stop and talk with the boy and his mother everyday as he passed the house. Little did he know that he would soon fall in love and marry the mother of little Otis.
Birdie Florence Payne had been raised by her stepdad and mother. She knew what it was to have a broken heart, due to a tragic event that happened to her a couple years before she met Giuseppe.
Birdie had been taken advantage of and raped at a young age. After the child was born, Birdie named him - Otis. He became a precious gift to her; for it was because of young Otis that Birdie met Giuseppe.
After marrying Birdie, Giuseppe had come to be known as Joe Dell. He and his new family worked their way through the coal mines in Virginia before settling in Bell County, Kentucky, where they spent the rest of their lives as farmers.
I asked an older member of our family why Giuseppe shortened his name to Joe Dell. They told me that it happened when he moved into the coal mining camps.
When he started working in the coal mines, the workers had to have their names labeled on their helmets, so if there was a tragedy - such as an explosion, or if the mine shaft collapsed, the rescue teams would be able to quickly identify the bodies that were trapped in the rubble by viewing the name printed on their helmets. Many of the immigrants working in the coal mines would shorten their names so that the name would be bold on their helmets.
After Giuseppe (Joe) adopted Otis, he and Birdie went on to have 6 more children together.
Their oldest son - Frank Dell, was born in September of 1922 - the same year that Giuseppe was almost killed in an explosion on January 31st in the coal mine that was located in the town of Fourmile, Kentucky. Six men lost their lives that day, and Joe was badly injured.
Time went on and five years later they had a beautiful baby girl. Giuseppe named the baby after Giuseppe’s mother back home in Italy – Giuseppa. She grew up to be a beautiful young woman, who would become known as Josephine or “Jessie.” At the age of 15, she fell in love and married a man who was almost 10 years older than her. His name was Critten Grey. He was a very jealous man by nature. He would always go into a jealous rage if he thought anyone might be admiring beautiful young Giuseppa. They went on to start a family, and shortly after their 2nd son was born, Critten became even more rageful in his jealousy and began accusing Giuseppa of having an affair – although there was no truth to it at all.
One night as she lay in bed with their newborn son and her older baby boy in the next room, Critten came home in a fury. Without warning, he shot Giuseppa right in the bed with her baby. After realizing that he had instantly killed her, he stripped off all of his own clothes and ran out naked, screaming into the night. Driven by his inner demons, he disappeared into the forest that night. He was later arrested and sentenced to prison for murdering his 24-year-old wife.
Salvene Dell was Joe and Birdie’s son who was born in 1929, just 2 years after Josephine.
And then my Grandfather – Joe E. Dell came along in 1933.
I remember my mother, Kathlene, tell the stories of how my Grandpa Joe E. and his brother Salvene would talk about their sister’s murderer. When my mother was a young girl, she would hear Joe E. and his brothers plan their vendetta against Critten Grey. My mother said they were counting the time down for when he would be released from prison and they were going after him for killing their sister Josephine.
If it were not for my Grandfather’s experience of faith and his acceptance of Christianity that took place before Critten G. was released from prison, I am certain he would have carried out his vendetta with great fury. But instead he found the grace to forgive Critten Grey for the horrible murder of his sister, just as his Savior – Jesus Christ had forgiven him.
Giuseppe (Joe) and Birdie had another son named Johnnie in the summer of 1935 - the same year his parents died back home in Italy.
Already acquainted with grief, Joe found himself dealing with the death of his baby boy Jonnie the next year in the fall of 1936. Frank - 14 years old, Josephine - 9 years old, Salvene - 7 years old, Joe E. - 3 years old, all watched their 1-year old baby brother die from scarlet fever.
Almost two years after Johnnie’s death, Mary Magdalene, their second daughter and last child was born in the late spring of 1938.
All through the years Giuseppe affectionately spoke of his homeland - Italy. He had settled in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky because it reminded him of his mountain hometown of Rignano Garganico, in Foggia, Italy.
He loved to grow all kinds of different vegetables. He also loved to cook. He would make homemade pasta, and he loved hot peppers - the hotter the better. He would sit at the table and eat them like candy.
He loved his family and raised them to be hard workers. He also believed in strong discipline. I remember my grandfather - Joe, telling the stories of how his father would spank him with a horse whip. As a mischievous young boy, he would try to run and hide, and he remembered Giuseppe chasing him around the yard with the bull whip.
My grandmother Virgie - which is married to Joe E Dell, told me the story of when she and her brother, Claude Baker, were dating Joe E Dell and Joe’s sister - Mary Magdalene Dell.
Virgie and Claude came to Giuseppe’s house for dinner to court his son Joe and his daughter Mary. Giuseppe Scipione was preparing the meal. They watched Giuseppe roll out the dough and cut the pasta into strips. He would lay them over his arms until he had both arms hanging full of pasta, and then he had to hunch over as he carefully carried them over to the oven. Then Giuseppe made his own pasta sauce and he added a lot of spicy hot peppers. My grandmother Virgie and her brother Claude had never eaten Italian food before. Giuseppe sat and smiled as they tasted the dinner.
Claude was trying to impress his soon to be wife Mary and May’s father Giuseppe. Claude cried like a baby while eating the spicy food, but he didn’t dare stop. He wanted to prove that he was a tough guy! My Grandmother Virgie remembers that Giuseppe laughed and laughed at them.
Virgie also told that while Giuseppe was making the dinner his wife Birdie prepared Corn Bread, which was a common accompaniment to American meals. But Giuseppe told Birdie that cornbread was to be fed to hogs. He would not eat the cornbread. He made her bake fresh bread to pair with the Italian pasta and sauce that Giuseppe S. had made.
My grandfather, Joe E. Dell, wanted so badly to take my great grandfather Giuseppe on a trip back home to Italy before he was too old to make the trip, but it had become difficult to do so because at some point through the years Giuseppe and Birdie had suffered from a house fire that had burned up all of Giuseppe’s documents and letters from back home in Italy.
My grandfather Joe E. was trying to gather the needed paperwork when Giuseppe became too ill to make the trip, and then he later passed at the age of 76 in March of 1962.
Birdie Dell died 7 years later in April of 1969.
